Have you ever had one of those days where you feel so overloaded and stressed out, you feel like you’re on the verge of a small breakdown? Unfortunately, most of us feel like this from time to time, and everyone has their different methods of escaping. For some, its exercise, cooking, music, TV, or a warm bath, and although all of these methods can work, the next time you are feeling overworked, try giving yourself a foot massage. This may sound strange to some, but there have been several studies which have shown a foot massage can lower stress at nearly the same level a full body massage would. To help you reduce your stress through a foot massage, and do it efficiently, here are some step by step directions you can follow.
Step #1: Create a relaxing environment for yourself; you will not be able to fully enjoy a stress relieving foot massage if you are in a room with a blaring TV, or have kids running around everywhere. Pick a spot in your house, or outside, that you feel most comfortable and turn on some soothing music in the background.
Step #2: Make sure your feet are nice and clean, wash them in warm water with soap, and then dry them thoroughly.
Step #3: Apply a stress relieving scented oil to your feet. You can use whichever oil you prefer, but some good suggestions would be lavender, almond, sesame, or linalool.
Step #4: Begin the foot massage at the base of your small toe, applying an amount of pressure you feel comfortable with.
Step#5: Move on to the next toe, and start rubbing at the base once again.
Step#6: Apply a light amount of pressure on the skin located in the middle of the small toe and the toe next to it.
Step#7: Go to the middle toe and move it in a circular motion, rubbing, pulling, and stretching it simultaneously. Continue to do this to all other toes.
Step #8: Next, apply pressure to both sides of your heel just under your ankle using either your palms or fingers. In a clockwise motion, rub around your ankles, this will help to increase your energy and circulation will be improved as well.
Step#9: Rub around your calf muscle to get rid of any tension that may be stuck there.
Step#10: Repeat to your second foot, and start the process again whenever your stress returns!
