Therapy FAQs

What type of therapy do you do?

We specialize in Structural Integration (or sometimes referred to as “rolfing.”) Structural Integration is a form of unique bodywork that systematically releases patterns of stress and impaired function in your soft tissue (also known as your fascia). Visit the link below to learn more about fascia, Structural Integration, and how our therapy works.

Who can Structural Integration help?

Everyone can benefit from Structural Integration. Time, gravity and injury affect our bodies more than we realize. This therapy helps to bring the body into balance, which can help alleviate pain and dysfunction. Our clients range from infants, all the way to senior citizens, and everyone in between. Although each person will respond differently to our therapy, everyone can experience positive change.

How is Structural Integration different than massage?

Although both therapies involve hand-on manipulation, each technique is performed differently. Structural Integration practitioners are lengthening connective tissue, or fascia, to create balance and fluidity in the body. Regular massage techniques are primarily concerned with just the muscles. Although there are many different forms of massage, these techniques are commonly used for relaxation and stress reduction, which produces short-term results when it comes to addressing pain and tension. The goal of Structural Integration is to achieve long-term results by affecting the structure of your body through the manipulation of your body’s soft tissue.

However, we do understand that sometimes you just want a relaxing massage experience. This is why we also offer a Signature Relaxation Massage. In this massage, we are still using Structural Integration techniques to help put your body in a more neutral, balanced state, but not to the degree of one of our therapy sessions. This is why even in our Signature Relaxation Massage, the effects of our massage will last longer than any other massage.

Does your therapy hurt?

Structural Integration is a personal process and each person’s experience is different. The client and practitioner will work together as a team to gauge the level of pressure used depending upon the type of sensation that is felt. Sensations can range from a satisfying release of pain and tension, to tenderness, or to temporary discomfort. You will always be in control of the pace of your session and the amount of pressure used by communicating with your practitioner.

Appointment FAQs

What should I wear?

You will be given time to change into the ideal attire (as listed below) before your scheduled session.

Structural Integration and Myokinetic Therapy Sessions
Ideal attire worn during the sessions are:

Women: Loose, short running shorts and a sports bra

Men: Loose, short running shorts

We refer to this attire as “viewing clothes.”

Signature Relaxation Massage Sessions
For these treatments it is customary to disrobe completely; however, you should undress to your comfort level. Treatments are most effective when the therapist can work directly on the skin. Our therapists are trained to keep you properly draped throughout the treatment, respecting your privacy at all times.

Injury Massage
Depending on the area being worked, you will be asked to wear viewing clothes, or to remove clothing and draping procedures will be applied.

Muscle Re-Education Sessions
Wear loose-fitting clothing that is easy to stretch in or does not limit your range of motion.

What should I expect at my first therapy appointment?

Initial Visit
When you arrive for your appointment, you will be asked to fill out our new client forms. Using the information you provide on these forms, your practitioner will ask preliminary questions to determine your overall health and your desired results. The practitioner will consider information about your physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress levels, and any areas of physical pain. The information gathered in this brief interview will help the therapist determine how to structure the session(s) to achieve your desired results.

Your practitioner will leave the room while you change into viewing clothes, or undress to your comfort level. If disrobing, you will be guided to lie on a massage table and cover yourself with a sheet. The practitioner will only uncover the area that she is working on. Therapy sessions can feel relaxing, but may also cause mild discomfort or soreness in areas that are very tense. In addition to manipulating tissue with her hands, the practitioner may also use their elbows to target specific areas.

Depending on the length of the massage and areas of the body being treated, you may also be asked to turn over from your back to stomach, or vice versa. Your practitioner will take care to lift your sheet and cover you as you turn.

Posture Analysis
During your initial consultation, you may be asked to stand in suggested attire or viewing clothes and be photographed for posture analysis. Using this photograph, your practitioner will chart your posture alignment. This photo will not only give you and your practitioner a road map for therapy, but you will also be able to later see the physical results of your therapy with an after-photo comparison. Along with this posture analysis, your practitioner may ask you to do simple movements that will show mobility, strength, and postural alignment. You will never be asked to do anything that is too painful for you or that makes you uncomfortable.

Therapy Environment
The therapy room is a place where we focus on your objectives and goals for creating balance, integration, and natural function to muscles and joints, as the body was designed. We strive for a balanced, therapeutic environment with simple comfortable surroundings meant to welcome and invite you to a safe space.

How important is hydration after my session?

Hydration is an important component in how well your body responds to our therapy. After your session is over, you should drink plenty of water to help facilitate the flow of lymph fluid and to facilitate the movement of waste from your soft tissue.

How often should I come?

We recommend 3 to 10 days between therapy sessions. The number of therapy sessions needed will vary from person to person. Your practitioner will design a treatment plan specific to your needs to help you achieve your desired results. Consult with your practitioner to determine the best plan for how often you should come in for therapy sessions.

Why was I given exercises to do at home?

These stretches and exercises will help facilitate the bodywork you received in your session. They are designed to address specific dysfunctions in your body to help restore full, natural function to muscles and joints. These exercises should be done at least 5 times per week. Visit the link below to learn more about muscle re-education.

What is your rescheduling policy?

We have a 24-hour rescheduling policy. If you need to make changes or cancel your appointment, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance of the appointment time to avoid fees. No-shows, changes or cancellations within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment time will be charged the full value of the service that was scheduled. Visit our policies page for more information about our policies.

I was in a recent car accident. Can you bill my auto insurance for my session?

Yes. If you have been in a recent car accident, our therapy can be covered under your auto policy’s personal injury protection, or PIP. This type of insurance claim is different than medical insurance, which enables us to bill your auto insurance for our therapy. Please contact our office to find out more about this process.
