Spinal Stenosis
Summary
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the small spinal canal, which contains the nerve roots and spinal cord, becomes compressed. This causes a “pinching” of the spinal cord and or/nerve roots. This can cause pain, cramping, weakness, or numbness. Depending on where the narrowing happens, you may feel these symptoms in the lower back, legs, neck, shoulder, or arms. With the way your nerves are set up in the body, if it is pinched on one side, you can feel the pain in both legs due to the fact that nerves decussate or cross over to the other side of your spine before going up to the brain. The best example of a decussation is the medulla oblongata and pons in the brain. Other ways this condition can be caused is by a thickening of the ligaments in the back, as well as by a bulging of the discs that separate the vertebrae. Normally this condition happens in men and women over the age of fifty. Others can be born with a disease that causes it as well. In severe cases people can experience trouble with your bowel, and bladder.
Cause
Spinal stenosis is caused wear-and-tear changes in the spine. With narrowing spaces in your spine pinching your spinal cord causing pain radiating up or down. Based on the two types of spinal stenosis. Cervical stenosis; where the narrowing occurs in the part of the spine in your neck, causing the pain upper back neck area. And Lumbar stenosis where, the narrowing occurs in the part of the spine in your lower back. which is the most common form of spinal stenosis.
Effects
- Numbness, weakness, cramping or pain in the legs, thighs or feet that makes it hard to walk.
- Pain that goes down the leg
- Abnormal bowel/and or bladder function
- In severe cases, partial or complete leg paralysis. This is considered a medical emergency and you should get to an emergency room as quickly as possible.
Treatment
Spinal stenosis can lead to the slow but steady loss of strength in the legs. At structura we can help the muscles relax and lengthen with manual therapy of the myofascial system by using structural physiotherapy or structural integration to help put the body in a better position to function properly and give you better range of motion. We may even assign you re-patterning exercises to facilitate the work we do and to re-educate your muscles to treat your musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Sometimes the pain from this condition can be quite disabling. One of the best ways to help is to keep moving. Exercise daily to get your strength up. Structura will also talk to you about the ten series, it will help the body as a whole to bring everything back into place that way your body is more aligned to work better in line with gravity. The combination of all this will help you to live a better, pain free life.
