Exercise and Recovery
Summary
Part of keeping the body healthy and strong is to exercise regularly. However, part of why people don’t want to exercise is due to the aftereffects of working out. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a common condition that comes from starting a workout regimen, especially when starting from scratch. Most aspiring athletes start an exercise program without any preparation or warm up. Whether you are an experienced athlete or a newbie trying to lose a few pounds, we are all prone to muscle soreness.

Cause
When we exercise, our bodies are pushed beyond what it is used to. This can be as simple as walking around the block instead of on the treadmill. New activities or adding to current activities pushes muscles to work harder than they are accustomed to. The pain is experienced because there is pressure put on the tissue that can result in microtears or strain. This is a normal reaction to small increases in activity. This makes the fascia tissue around the muscle feeling tired and worn. Which the brain interprets as pain.
Effects
When we are tired and sore we tend to slow down and work hard not to overexert ourselves. It is important to remember that the muscle soreness is a natural process and is part of our muscle tissues getting stronger and adapting to our new workout regimen. It is easy to get discouraged when feeling soreness and pain and this can lead to many less fit individuals to throw in the towel and give up or to misinterpret the pain as an injury. However, what we don’t use, we lose. Muscle tissue builds on stress and strain. It is important to realize that this type of pain is temporary.
Treatment
Pain, whether acute or chronic, can be debilitating and slow you down. It can limit your mobility and slow down your progress on workout plans. First, realize that you got to build up muscle tissue slowly. Take it easy when soreness is experienced but still move around with lighter exercise work like walking or swimming. A solid stretching routine has shown to greatly reduce soreness and increase recovery time. Structural physiotherapy can help reduce the recovery time as well, strengthening the tissue while breaking down any restrictions that might be present from working out. At Structura Body Therapies we specialize in optimizing your workout whether you are an experienced athlete or an aspiring health enthusiast we have a treatment for you.
