Piriformis Syndrome
Summary
Piriformis Syndrome can interrupt many of our daily activities such as, increased pain while sitting or standing for prolong periods, walking up stairs or inclines, and reducing range of motion in the hip.
Cause
It is a condition in which the piriformis muscle in the gluteal region spasms and causes pain in the hip and gluteal area. It can also irritate the sciatic nerve that is nearby, causing sciatica type symptoms, such as numbness, tingling or a burning sensation along the back of the leg and into the foot. Typically, it only affects just one side at a time.
Effects
The piriformis muscle starts at the lower spine and connects to the upper surface of each of the femur bones. Its function is to assist in rotation of the hip and turning the leg and foot laterally. It also runs diagonally with the sciatic nerve, which runs vertical directly beneath the muscle or in some case through the muscle. This is an important muscle as it helps stabilize the hip, which is a rather mobile joint.
Treatment
Where we can help – In our initial assessment, we will perform some manual resisted tests and special orthopedic tests specific to piriformis syndrome checking range of motion in the hip. Once we’ve determined a plan of action for your pain, we will proceed with manual therapy treatments and teach you how to use mobility tools and corrective exercise techniques to empower you to take control of your health.
