Neck pain is a common problem, with two-thirds of the population having neck pain at some point in their lives. Neck pain, although felt in the neck, can be caused by numerous other spinal problems. Neck pain may arise due to muscular tightness in either the neck and upper back, or pinching of the nerves emanating from the cervical vertebrae because of joint disruption in the neck and upper back.
Neck pain can also be caused because of Whiplash. An injury to the cervical spine caused by an abrupt jerking motion of the head, either backward or forward resulting from rapid acceleration or deceleration (as in an automobile accident). Whiplash is a soft tissue injury and may include one or more of the following – neck pain, stiffness, headaches, dizziness, and abnormal sensations such as burning or prickling and shoulder or back pain. Swelling and inflammation occur, which can place pressure on the nerves. This can result in pain and stiffness. Stiffness can take 24-48 hours to manifest. It is very common to take over two weeks for the full affects to settle in. Trigger points in the surrounding musculature can also form causing referral pain in the shoulders, neck, jaw and head. Headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, sprains of surrounding ligaments, and misaligned vertebrae can also manifest post whiplash.
Another common problem associated with the neck is Torticollis. A contracted state of the neck muscles producing an unnatural position of the head; a rotation and tilt sideways, forwards, or backwards. Torticollis is also known as wryneck. May include one or more of the following – decreased neck range of motion, headaches, neck pain, abnormal posture, and head shaking. Another common cause of torticollis could be because of congenital defects. A condition that presents at birth, as a result of either heredity or environmental stress influences.
