Anyone who suffers from the pain of arthritis knows how difficult it can be.  Although the body is usually trying to send us a message that something is wrong when you feel pain, that doesn’t mean you have to take it each day with no repercussions.  If you have arthritis, and are feeling pain on a regular basis, take it as a sign that you need to do something about it.

One of the methods you can use to ease the pain of arthritis is through massage.  Massage therapy can get rid of, or regulate, some of the symptoms of arthritis you may be experiencing.  It can also give anyone going through arthritis the feeling that they can do something about their condition, and help give them a sense of control over any pain.  The massage will be most beneficial for arthritis sufferers if the pressure is at a moderate level.

How massage works

Massage can reduce symptoms of arthritis because the body’s production of cortisol, a stress hormone, is lowered.  Also, the body’s production of serotonin is increased, so overall mood is improved, and neurotransmitters linked to pain are reduced so sleep is enhanced as well.

If you are thinking about trying out massage to help you reduce the pain of arthritis, make sure to check with your doctor first.  You will want to be sure that massage is safe for your individual condition, because some massage methods may include high pressure. Also, make sure you use constant communication with your therapist as you are getting the massage, especially if you are feeling pain.  If you have any of the following conditions, use proper caution before getting a massage.

  • Fever or skin rash
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Damaged joints due to arthritis
  • High blood pressure
  • Varicose veins

Keep in mind, the main goal of your massage is to feel better, not worse, so consulting with your doctor and massage therapist beforehand will accomplish this.  Tell your massage therapist the specific things you want to accomplish with the massage, like pain relief in certain areas, so they will be able to modify their techniques accordingly.  A good massage therapist will be flexible with you, and cater to your individual needs.  If you have arthritis, and want to try massage as a way to decrease the symptoms of pain and soreness associated with the condition, make an appointment with one of our skilled massage therapists today! 801-897-8711
